Q: how long will vitamin deficiency symptoms last?
I have been on vitamin b complex for a month, and started amultivitamin 3 days ago. I have been getting rapid heartbeat and severe restless feelings. I have been tested for almost everything else it could be and I really think it is a deficiency. The first few days I took the vit b complex my symptoms totally dissapeared, but came back. Will it take awhile fo rthe symptoms to disappear? Help please.
A: .rapid heart beat can mean allergy. Also a calcium/magnesium deficiency might be a problem. When you take B vitamins you must take cal/mag.Restlessness sounds like calcium might help.Try a supplement 1000mg cal/500mag.
Q: What are the symptoms of a Vitamin B-12 deficiency?
…specifically — beyond the obvious lack of energy.
A: If your vitamin B12 deficiency anemia is mild, you may not have symptoms or you may not notice them. Some people may think they are just the result of growing older. Symptoms develop slowly over years, as the amount of vitamin B12 absorbed by the body decreases and the vitamin B12 stored in your body is used up.
As the anemia becomes worse, you may have:1, 2
Weakness.
Fatigue.
Lightheadedness.
A pale appearance.
A sore, red tongue or bleeding gums.
Loss of taste and appetite with weight loss.
Diarrhea or constipation.
A rapid heartbeat or chest pain.
Shortness of breath upon exertion.
Low levels of vitamin B12 cause damage to the brain and nerve cells. The symptoms this causes may be the first ones you notice. They can include:2
Numbness or tingling in the fingers and toes.
Poor balance and coordination.
Forgetfulness.
Depression.
Confusion.
Difficulty thinking and concentrating.
Impaired judgment and poor control of impulses.
A decreased ability to sense vibration.
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
Dementia, a decline in mental abilities that is severe enough to interfere with daily life.
Q: Vitamin B for anxiety?
Has anyone got any experiences with taking Vitamin B for anxiety and mild depression…I feel like I have all the symptoms for a vitamin b deficiency…and I really hate taking Zoloft…in my heart of hearts I don’t think I need to be on antidepressants…
A: That won’t help at all, B vitamins unlock natural energy.
St. John’s Wort (herbal supplement) would be better for that.
Q: Can anyone answer my questions concerning vitamin b-12 deficiency and anemia?
After a series of blood tests, it was found that I have anemia and B-12 deficiency. I am taking an oral iron supplement and was prescribed B-12 shots, which I am giving myself. I’ve been reading about this deficiency and the symptoms, etc. For well over a year, I have had fatigue and tiredness that is all but debilitating…I go to work then come home too exhausted to do much else, and no matter how much sleep or rest I get, I never feel well rested. Also, last fall I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but upon reading about the deficiency, I learned that it can cause irritability, mood swings, forgetfulness and depression. What are the chances that I was not suffering from bipolar at all…that it was all a result of the B-12 deficiency? ANY info or experience with this problem will be very helpful. Thanks.
A: You never know you may have been misdiagnosed humans make mistakes. One symptom is behavioral change (i put arrows around it below…
Your body requires very little vitamin b12 or cobalamin and most of us get sufficient quantities of it in our normal meals to satisfy our daily requirements. Although it’s rare to see vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms it can still be useful to be able to recognise them just in case. You’re most vulnerable to vitamin b12 deficiency if you’ve vegan and don’t use the available dietary supplements containing vitamin b12. Infants breast-feeding from vegan mothers can also be at risk. Vitamin b12 supplements are generally regarded as safe because there are few known adverse effects of overdose.
The main symptom that arises from vitamin b12 deficiency is a type of anemia that causes you to feel tired, weak and lethargic. You might also feel nauseous, constipated and become very flatulent (gas). You may also lose your appetite and suffer weight loss.
More severe cases can give vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms, which include:
Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
Insomnia
Loss of memory
Dizziness
Lack of balance
Depression
Digestive problems
Dizziness
Liver enlargement
Eye problems Headaches
Hallucinations
Inflamed tongue
Breathing difficulties
Loss of memory
Palpitations
Neurological damage
Tinitus or ringing in the ears
Vitamin b12 is commonly found in animal products like eggs, dairy, fish, meat and animal organs. B12 is rarely found in vegetables, which is why vegetarians and especially vegans who don’t eat dairy products or meat, are especially at risk. If you fall into this category then you should consider using vitamin supplements containing b12.It’s also important to realise that the operation of vitamin b12 is dependent on sufficient quantities of other vitamins being present in your body so you should take care to get a balanced diet to avoid vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.

Neurological symptoms, often referred to as subacute combined degeneration (SCD), are the biggest concern regarding B12 deficiency. The damage can be irreversible if not caught early enough. SCD affects peripheral nerves and the spinal cord, and is normally different in children than adults.8 .Theories of How B12 Deficiency Causes Nerve DamageThere are 3 main theories as to how B12 deficiency causes nerve damage:
1. B12 deficiency produces a lack of methionine for conversion into S-adenosylmethionine (SAM).9 SAM is required for the production of phosphatidylcholine10 which is part of the myelin (the fatty material that insulates many nerves).10 (See Figure: Methionine-Homocysteine-Folate-B12 Cycle.)
2. The inability to convert methylmalonyl-CoA (a 3-carbon molecule) to succinyl-CoA (a 4-carbon molecule) results in an accumulation of propionyl-CoA (a 3-carbon molecule). Fatty acids are normally made by adding 2 carbons at a time to an even numbered carbon molecule. In an overabundance of 3 carbon molecules, large amounts of unusual 15-carbon and 17-carbon fatty acids may be produced and incorporated into nerve sheets, causing altered nerve function.11
3. Nerves are damaged by different hormone-like molecules (cytokines, tumor necrosis factor, and epidermal growth factor) which become unbalanced in the nerve tissue in B12 deficiency.8
When is it Time to Call a doctor? There are some serious diseases that have similarities to B12 deficiency, including Guillian-Barre syndrome, Lyme neuropathy, heavy metal intoxication, and lupus myelopathy.12 Anyone who develops symptoms of nerve damage should see a doctor immediately for treatment.
Q: Is anyone besides me aware that soy fed to chickens spikes their MSG content?
I can’t eat the stuff and had to find out the hard way — muscle cramps and vitamin B deficiency symptoms when I was heavier… headaches and heart palpitations when my cholesterol was more in line.
A: no I didnt but thanx I am allergic to msg and have the same symptoms they have recently found out that soy really isnt that good for you
Q: Vitamin D and B deficiency?
What kind of symptoms and problems can arise if you have deficiencies with both of these vitamins….just curious as to what the responses are.
A: Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets which would only happen if you had the deficiency for many months. Rickets includes bowed legs and bowed arms. This is due to the bones softening and bending if the bones are weight bearing. It can also cause bony lumps to grow on the ribs. They recently have discovered a relationship with people who have a lot of vitamin d and less cancer. It is recommended you eat 200 iu to prevent a deficiency, however much higher amounts like one to two thousand international units, gives some protection from cancer.
Good sources of vitamin D are sunshine, 15 minutes a day without sun protection, then they recommend sun protection, after the 15 minutes. Food sources are sardines, and fortified milk, you would need two cups of milk a day to get 200 iu.
Vitamin B deficiency:
There are several B vitamins, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and Biotin . They all have different symptoms. I will address vitamin B as a whole for the most part.
Vitamin B deficiency can cause problems with your central nervous system, heart, skin and blood.
Some of the symptoms may be photophobia, sore throat, cheilosis, fissure tongue, seborrheic dermatitis, depression, irritability, memory lapses, insomnia, loss of appetite, and stomach upset, anemia, muscle weakness, eczema, migraine, dandruff, hair loss, drowsiness and hallucinations.

Q: Causes of Vitamin B2 deficiency?
I`m 35 years old and throughout my life I occasionally experience problems with my lips and tongue. My lips can become cracked (which I treat with Blistex). My tongue can be red and itchy with little white spots in the affected area(which I treat with Bonjela). A few weeks ago my GP prescribed Vitamin B-Complex because she reckoned my symptoms correspond to having a slight Vitamin B2 deficiency. The Vitamin B-Complex has worked wonders. What puzzles me is the fact I have the same diet as the rest of my family but they never have problems, also, I am fit and healthy with no underlying pathology. Could it be true to say I have been born with a slightly low absorption rate for Vitamin B2? If I have been born with it, am I likely to have a slightly low absorption rate for all other B Vitamins?
A: I’m unsure about you question, did your Dr say B12 deficiency as I’ve never heard of a B2 deficiency, I will check back.
Q: Can vitamin and protein deficiency be the cause of my depression?
Or is it the symptoms of the deficiency that is causing it? I have been feeling extremely tired, having trouble staying focused and just not thinking clearly, in addition to nightmares, crying, etc… I had some lab work done and I have several deficiencies to deal with B-12, D, iron, protein. Not sure if I should just try to deal with these and the rest will fall into place or if I should try treating depression at the same time.
I did see a doctor or I wouldn’t have had the labs drawn and know what the problem is. But I don’t think doctors are complete gods and think that sometimes they over treat people. I was kinda looking for a been there done that this is what worked for me advice.
Thanks to the rest of you who actually read my question. I just don’t want to be over treating and get started on a medication that I will become dependant on if I don’t need to. I am not taking any other medications at this time that could be causing the problems. I know what is the cause of my deficiencies I just thought that it was under control but apparently I am going to have to supplement my diet even more to compensate.
A: not getting adequate protein is a big problem; you need protein to make serotonin (i call it the ‘happy hormone’). you would be surprised how much better feel when you are properly nourished. just treating the deficiencies will make you feel better but it may take a while. if you are severely depressed where it is interfering with your job and home life or if you are suicidal at all’ treat the depression by all means! when your nutritional problems are under control, you can wean off the anti-depressants.
hope this helps!
Q: What is causing my girlfriend to feel like she is going to pass out?
Every so often my girlfriend feels like this, but she told me that she almost got in an accident today and it really is worrying me. She is 23 and healthy (and def not pregnant). This is what she just told me “ok so everything is normal, i get a sudden headache right behind my eyes, feels like a string pulling behind my eyes, my stomach gets very queasy , i could throw up, my vision goes blurry/ i cant focus” and “my head is spinning , i get the feeling i am going to pass out/am falling asleep” all of this extremely sudden. if i move it gets very bad, no turning head/ looking up or down”
Her mother just got diagnosed with a Vitamin B deficiency, but my girlfriend’s symptoms don’t match with what I have found online concerning that.
Please, if anyone knows I would really appreciate it. She is really stubborn and won’t go to the hospital. If she does, what kind of tests should she get done?
Also, she had this happen to her about 4 years ago in college. She had a seizure, was rushed to the hospital and the doctors found nothing. They just told her to eat 3 square meals a day.
A: Well, for one thing… the LAST thing she needs is a secondhand diagnosis on Answers.
Her condition could be caused by any number of things. She needs to see doctor… and the sooner the better… because it’s not going to get any better.
I have an idea what it may be, but it would scare the hell out of you if I told you.
Have her see a doctor… seriously.!

Q: Does anybody know if YAZ birth control can cause vitamin deficiency?
I decided to take myself off of YAZ, first off about 4 months of taking it, I was always extremely tired, and very nauseous, bad mood swings around my cycle, and my anxiety levels were horrible. Well back in April my doctor did blood work and my vitamin D levels and B levels were really down…which now I have to take a Vit. D pill and a multi vitamin everyday. I never had this problem before, or the symptoms…I was on it for two and a half years, and I quit taking it in October. Can this pill cause Vitamin Deficiency?
A: yes. it can. i had the same experience on yaz. i took it for 3 years…was always tired. and developed extreme anxiety out of nowhere. i started to take a vitamin b complex and a multivitamin…which did help!
this website has helped me tremendously in my ‘recovery’ coming off yaz. i had other problems though, like inner ear issues, ibs issues, lots of headaches and heart palpitations.

Q: My doctor told me to take 2 B-12 vitamins a day?
Last year I went to the doctor about either swollen lymph nodes or thinning hair. Well, they had blood work done and the doctor told me that I had low B-12 levels, or a deficiency. She said to take two vitamins a day. Whenever I take them, I feel better. When I don’t, I feel bad. Here’s how:
I’m 20 years old. I wouldn’t say that I’m a depressed person, but I have mood swings every day. I can go from being happy to extremely low. On really bad days, I think about suicide and sometimes cut myself because I feel out of control. I feel mentally unstable, fatigued, and withdrawn on those days. I usually don’t care about anything, can be aggressive, verbally abusive to family members, and am prone to have angry tantrums. Every day, I am irritated or agitated. When I grow bored, I start feeling horrible, and ponder dying. I have extreme anxiety, worry all the time, and am scared to go to big events (like ballgames and places I’m not used to seeing). I get nervous like that and ponder death a lot. I have trouble paying attention, I have a poor memory, forget easily, and day dream a lot.
Could this all be symptoms of B-12 deficiency? I don’t take them every day and actually haven’t taken them for months. I started taking them again the other day, twice a day, but I usually can’t remember to take them. I can’t stand who I am..Is this a deficiency of B-12 or is it something else?
Also, I meant to ask, how fast would B-12 vitamins work and clear up any symptoms? When I take them I feel better, like I said. But I don’t know if that’s just me thinking it (pyschological) or if it’s the vitamin.
A: Vitamin B 12 plays an important role in neurologic function. B 12 deficiency can be the cause of some psychiatric conditions such as:
Irritability, personality change
Mild memory impairment, dementia
Depression
Psychosis
So yes, it is entirely possible that taking your vitamins could improve your symptoms. Always consult your doctor if your symptoms change.
