Q: I have some very sick puppies and am at my wits end. They have been to vet, but no better,HELP!!!?
I have 5 that are 10 weeks old and 2 that are8 weeks old.I have shelties and take very good care of my dogs. They all have all their shots and are vet checked on time Q 6 mo.My friend had a pup 4 mo. oldthat got sick 1st and was taken to vet next am as soon as open and was told he had a virus that is new and caused from all rain and water standing around. He was given shot of new best antibotic for dogs,b12 and fluids under skin, sent home with albon with pepto, and reglan nausea med,put von gator aide, neutra cal, and chicken broth, took 5 days but is fine , then ouppies started getting sick and got all the same except they are getting a pen shot every other day and a b12 shot 4 times a day.We are giving boiled rice blende to mush a tiny bit of yogurt organic chick broth baby turkey and rice or chicken and noodles, and we give this in a syringe 3cc every 3 hours 1cc karo syrup 1 0r2 a day , thry drink water.Any ideas more we can do?My vet is now on vacation but have spoken to her. Help .
A: The yogurt is really good for them you can give them more than a tiny bit. My dog was just sick and she had more of that than anything and in 4 days was back to normal It sounds like they all have Giardia, did the vet say they had that? You seem to be doing everything right. If your vet doesn’t get back soon, maybe you should see another vet. Keep a close eye on them. Also Pedialyte works well too. I hope all works out for the best. Shelties are near and dear to my heart. I love mine to bits. Take care….
Q: is the meal replacement bar im eating healthy?
its called optrimax (anybody hear it before?)
in the nutrition information i found these:
1. inulin, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, copper, zinc, iron, chromium, vit A, vit B1 (im guessing these r all minerals?)
2. riboflavin, niacin, panthothenic acid, vit B6, vit B12, vit C, vit D, vit E, Folic Acid, biotin, super citrimax (dont know what this is, some kind of a special secret ingredients?), L-carnitine, phosphotidylcholine
in the ingredients section theres:
soy protein isolate, soy fibre, tapioca starch, salt, whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, fruit juice, natural grain dextrins, brown rice syrup, yogurt flavoured coating (14%), sugar hydrogenated vegetable fat, skim milk powder, yogurt powder, emulsifier (lecithin), inulin, fruit (4%), canola oil, soy lecithin, and milk minerals, mg, vit C, zn, fe, vit e, niacin, vit A, copper, pantothenic acid, vit B3, vit B6, riboflavin, chromium, vit b1, vit B12
A: NO!!
Trypsin inhibitors in soy interfere with protein digestion and may cause pancreatic disorders. In test animals soy containing trypsin inhibitors caused stunted growth.
Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.
Soy phytoestrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.
Vitamin B12 analogs in soy are not absorbed and actually increase the body’s requirement for B12.
Soy foods increase the body’s requirement for vitamin D.
Fragile proteins are denatured during high temperature processing to make soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein.
Processing of soy protein results in the formation of toxic lysinoalanine and highly carcinogenic nitrosamines.
Free glutamic acid or MSG, a potent neurotoxin, is formed during soy food processing and additional amounts are added to many soy foods.
Soy foods contain high levels of aluminum which is toxic to the nervous system and the kidneys.
Q: What should I feed my Vegan Toddler?
I am a new vegan but my wife has been a vegetarian for many years but not vegan. We both now went vegan and want our 13month old baby to go vegan as well.
We still feed her eggs and Yogurt , for milk we give her rice milk fortified with calcium and B12.
Now if we stop her from eating eggs she’ll be deprived of iron and B12 and if we stop her from eating Yogurt she’ll be deprived from the calcium. I know they are in the rice milk but its not enough. What do vegan parents feed their vegan babies? I really want to know.
We use to feed her soy milk but we read horrible horror stories about how soy is a poison! so we stopped, were can i find a list or menu of food that contains all the vitamins and minerals a baby needs? And can you give a 13month old supplements?
Many thanks
A: Please don’t listen to all the uniformed answers. The American Dietetic Association, the nation’s foremost authority on nutrition, has this to say about vegetarian and vegan diets: “Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence.”
I suggest meeting with a veg-friendly nutritionist to plan a healthy vegan diet for your baby. Also, see this site: http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vegetarian_kids.html
Good luck!
Q: Does this sound healthy?
I’m 16, and I recently went vegan after being vegetarian for a few months.
I try to eat a very balanced diet, including things like tofu, tempeh, nuts, whole grains, fruit, and vegetables. I also try to get at least three servings of calcium-rich food/drinks every day, like a glass of almond milk or some soy yogurt. Plus, I take a vegan multivitamin to get B12.
Do I sound healthy? Even though I try hard to get enough calcium, and I’m sure I am, I’m still a little concerned about it, because I really don’t want weak bones.
And please, no troll answers. Thanks.
A: Yes! Keep up the good diet. Add in a good multivitamin daily.
Did you know that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Church that promotes a healthy lifestyle? There are literally tens of thousands of Vegetarians and Vegans who are Seventh-day Adventist Christians. Look for a Christian Church that has some things in common with your Health needs.
Seventh-day Adventist Christians preach the everlasting Gospel and keep the Biblical Sabbath(Saturday) day Holy. Sabbath School begin at 9:30am. Worship begin at 11:00am every Saturday.
God’s true Church believes that Jesus is God.
God’s true Church believes in the Trinity.
God’s true Church believes in the death of Christ on the Cross.
God’s true Church will uphold the Moral Law(Ten Commandments)
God’s true Church will Baptize by Immersion not Sprinkling.
God’s true Church will not eat Unclean Foods(Pork, Catfish, etc.)
God’s true Church will be a Worldwide Church preaching the message of Christ.
God’s true Church will teach Biblical literal six day Creation. NO Evolution.
God’s true Church will have the gift of Prophecy.
God’s true Church will preach Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
God’s true Church will stand against Sexual Immorality. Homosexuality, Adultery and Fornication are Sins.
God’s true Church will preach against Strong drink. Alcohol is not allowed. (Proverbs 20:1).
Remember God’s true last day Church will not be a popular Church. Most people will attack God’s Biblical Church with vigilance. Satan himself will attack God’s Church(Revelation 14:12) Truth crushed to the ground will always rise to the top.
Q: My son wont drink formula anymore!! He is 8.5 months old is this too early? I don’t want to force him.?
When I try to give him formula he just throws the bottle away. But He will drink milk, and I bought a vitamin supplement with Vitamin A, B1,B2, B3, C,and D. He eats lots always has but is still only eating baby foods and yogurt (3.25 % that is sweetened only with a little fruite juice). But what about B6 and B12 and Vitamin K and everything else, I am really worried. My family doctor is old fashioned and a little mean so I am afraid to tell him. Please I need some good advice. I make sure he gets fruit rice cereal meat and veggies everyday. He will eat mum mum crackers as well. I am just worried about his nutrion. He has about 3 bottles a day sometimes 4 but always 3 meals with snacks. He is 10 kg (22lbs) He also will drink fruit juice but I know it’s not as important. Thanks for your help!
A: my daughter went off formula at about that age too, (8 months) my doctor said not to worry, it’s normal, as long as she’s getting a well-rounded diet, and baby foods cover that easily. Apparently most babies go off formula between 8 and 12 months. Good luck!
ps – don’t mind those who say not to give him milk yet, it really is fine, make sure it’s whole milk though!
Q: what am I suppose to eat?
so I’m a vegetarian and I grew up that way, I now found out that I can’t have wheat, gluten, soy , dairy products,
I still eat plain yogurt because I need calcium, I’m tired of eating just beans and vegetables
I can’t have soy based meat because as I said I can’t have soy and most contain wheat and gluten in them. If I go into a gluten wheat free shop most stuff it in contains soy. Any information will be a great help.
I do eat eggs for protein and to get b12, I’m not a vegan, although I only have plain yogurt and eggs.
Any ideas where to get other protein and iron from?
wow , this has been really helpful, thanks so much!!
A: Hey im a vegetarian who cant have gluten or dairy, and purposefully avoid soy. We can relate!
Heres what I eat:
Gluten free cereals with rice milk
Corn or Brown rice tortillas with hummus and veggies
Gluten free pasta with earth balance(butter substitute) and steamed veggies, maybe some bruschetta
Gluten free rice crackers with hummus
Corn chips and salsa
Etc.
Okay so Sunshine Burgers, Oregon Harvest Veggi Patty, and Bahama Burgers are all gluten/dairy/soy free. My favorite is Sunshine and Bahama, sunshine coming in first. You should try them. Sunshine is great and made with rice, veggies, sunflower seeds and herbs.
“Enjoy Life” is a brand that makes products free of the top 8 allergens(soy, dairy, wheat, shellfish, nuts, eggs, etc) They make delicious cookies, snack bars, cereal, etc. You should try to find some products made by them.
Iron–eat things with spinach, sesame seeds, nuts and beans. If you recently found out about the gluten, you may need a supplement(gluten can often cause you to not absorb nutrients so it would be good to get your iron up for awhile with a supplement)
Protein-You’re probably fine. Beans, nuts, seets, vegetables, fruit, heck ANYTHING aside from oil has protein! ! !
If you are supposed to be dairy free you honestly cant be eating yogurt! Seriously! Calcium can come from brocolli, sesame seeds, fortified orange juice, fortified non-dairy milks, etc. Too much calcium can be worse than too little.
Basically there is an alternative for almost everything. I understand how hard it is, because I have all the same restrictions. Soon it will become second nature, promise! Earth balance has a soyfree dairy free non-hydrogenated “butter”. It tastes just like butter. If at some point you need something sweet, find a good normal cookie or brownie recipe, use gluten free flour, earth balance, enjoy life’s dairy free choc chips, and make them. Gluten free substitutes can be just as good! When baking, use 1/2 tsp to 1 cup of flour.

Dinner:
- Whatever my mom makes
- I make my own soup (usually includes kidney a/o black beans, corn, bell peppers, and carrots)
Snack:

- Frozen Strawberry Fiberone Yogurt
- A bowl of fruit
- Toast
- Chips
- Bowl of steamed veggies… sometimes fresh
- Celery and carrots
- Tomatoes /w salt

Thanks! Btw, this isn’t what I eat in a day! This is anything I would eat, so please tell me what is good, bad, what nutrients it provides, etc. I’m 12 (almost 13) by the by.
P.S. I hate bananas (most of the time) and I REALLY dislike peanut butter (and most nuts).
I don’t eat fish… if I ate fish then I would have listed it on here
If you are talking about the goldfish… EWWW who eats actual goldfish!?!?!
I was talking about the cheddar crackers… jeez.

A BIT LONG READ FROM THE (*) if you have not time.. thanks

Sorry about the lenglthy
A: Well, first thing is…booster juice isn’t as healthy as it seems. Even though they have fruit and yogurt in the smoothies, there is still lots of sugar and juice. So making your own smoothie at home is a good idea.
To make your smoothie with ingredients that will help keep you full:
- fiber is a good idea! Pick a fiber that is easily drinkable. I like Fiberrific, a brand, because it’s completely dissolvable in water and you can’t taste it. you can also add fiber like ground flax seed (very healthy!), salba, or psyllium husks. It doesn’t matter how much you put into your smoothie, just make sure you start with a small amount and increase it over time. If you add too much at first, you may end up with some gas/digestive problems.
- Protein. When you combine protein and carbs together (like milk and fruit), it helps you feel full longer. You can put a protein powder in your smoothie if that’s helpful, otherwise milk or soy milk is a good idea. It says that you’d put w.e. powder in, is that whey powder? If so, that’s protein!
- Also, when using yogurt, make sure it’s plain, no sugar added. When you start adding fruit and flavors to yogurt, the sugar content rises high.
- The wheat grass is very healthy! You could also put a little green tea (like Japanese matcha tea, a green powdered tea) in to help boost your metabolism and curb hunger.
That’s all my ideas for now!
Oh, and you can get all the above that I’ve mentioned at your local grocery store or health food store.
Q: How can I kick the dairy habit?
I’ve been vegetarian for a little over a year now, and I’m trying to go vegan one meal at a time. So far I’ve mostly got it down to two vegan meals a day. However, I have a dairy problem.
Ice cream, cheese, milk, yogurt; it’s all so fast, filling, and tasty. And it’s an easy go-to for protein, calcium, and B12. I am having a problem completely eliminating it from my diet. Usually I manage 2 vegan meals a day, but snacks are a big problem for me.
So, any tips on how to kick the dairy habit? What can I substitute for easily obtained B12, calcium, and protein?
Note: I don’t want to have too much soy in my diet. I’m still living at home, and my parents are fairly anti-soy. Quite honestly, I’m a bit leery of soy myself. I also want to stay an under-the-radar vegan; there was enough eye-rolling and joke-cracking when I went vegetarian, not to mention that my parents would probably freak if I out-and-out told them I wasn’t going to drink milk anymore.
Thanks!
A: When you eliminate dairy you eat more greens and at least three servings of nuts a day in order to get the calcium. Combine grains and legumes at your meals and you will get plenty of filling protein.
Replace these dairy products with dairy imitation. Milk= soy, almond, rice, hemp, or oat milk. Ice cream= rice dream, or soy delicious, or coconut milk frozen desert. There’s also sherbet. Best pizza you can eat in my opinion has no cheese at all. Make a wheat or corn crust put on sundried tomatoes, artichokes, mushrooms, and olives.
B12- can be consumed via tofu, fortified cereals, fortfied plant milk, Kombucha, and Fortified nutritional yeast flakes,
vegemite.
Regarding the cheese this company in the link below makes dairy free cheese out of rice instead of soy:

I take a multivtiamin daily and vitamin B12. Besides the calories being a little too low I sometimes add in some veggies and a fruit in the morning. I’m 15, 5 feet, and weigh 115 pounds. Trying to get down to 100 pounds in 3 months.
The total carbs is with the sugar added in.. I figured that since sugar is a carb might as well count it as one.. right?
A: It’s a perfect diet!! I live on a diet like that everyday, but it’s not really a diet anymore really. I eat VERY healthy though!
A tip for loosing 1-2 pounds a day, is eating your dinner before 4:00 PM and not eat any snack afterwords. Also, keep on writing down what your having everyday. It’s eaasier to loose weight that way!
Eat less then 1,000 calories a day, and you’ll drop the weight like a water balloon, I did.
Also, exexercise LOT!!!!
Q: My adult cat throws up frequently. Looking for help…?
My cat Homer (9yrs old) has been throwing up for the past 3 weeks. I took him to the vet who suggested giving him Pepcid AC and Flagyl, unfortunately he was still vomiting. I’m afraid he links eating with vomiting so it’s even more difficult to get him to eat. I’ve tried various soft & hard cat foods but the only thing he seems to want to eat is yogurt and his kitty treats. On June 18th he was given a shot of vitamin B12 and a steroid shot w/a prescription for Prednisone which I administer on a daily basis. The vet also gave me 2 cans of a/d to try and although he ate about 1/2 a can’s worth over a two-day period – he now has no interest even if I warm it up. I’ve tried deli meat, boiled chicken, tuna in water but it doesn’t help. I plan on checking with my vet to see if baby food is an option but was curious to know if anyone else had any suggestions? Background on Homer – as of Feb 2010, he’s had a clean bill of health. Vet suggested might be a GI infection, inflammatory bowl disease, pancreatitis or even early stages of cancer. The results of his blood work – normal. I appreciate any feedback as I’m at a loss of what do for him.
A: Awww – poor Homer. My little guy is going through something very similar (I could have written this a couple of months ago). My guy is 15 and was vomiting constantly, barely eating and losing weight. Other than that – he seemed fine. Like Homer, the blood work kept coming back normal. Also like Homer, the vet suggested diagnosis that are the same (IBD, pancreatitis, early stage cancer, etc). He’s been doing the same meds (B12 shots, Flagyl, Pred, Pepcid AC). A number of weeks ago we added Reglan, an anti-nausea med. All of this started in Feb, with each new med added one at a time to evaluate its effectiveness. I have to say things have finally been getting much better. The addition of Reglan, and prior to that the Pred, seemed to be the tipping point of vomiting only 1-2/week (a HUGE improvement!) and gaining back weight. He has perked up quite a bit, too.
Besides adding the Reglan, we used an appetite stimulant to jump start his appetite. That worked well, and was only used short term. Prior to this, my guy only ate super-healthy grain-free Wellness wet and dry. Now he still eats (a little) of the Wellness dry and (mostly) canned Fancy Feast. He loves it – I tried every flavor I could find and found 3 he consistently liked. My vet said Fancy Feast is like crack for cats – almost all love it. She said she’d rather have him eat McDonalds (the Fancy Feast) than have to continue on the appetite stimulants to get him to eat the healthy stuff.
As he’s been improving, we’ve been slowly decreasing some meds. The course of B12 shots are done. The Pred is down to once a day, as is the Flagyl – both used to be twice a day. Each decrease is taken one med, one week at a time, so there is no confusion what caused what to happen. For my guy it has been finding the right combo to keep all in control.
Bottom line of the whole story: your vet may want to try an appetite stimulant (short term) and Reglan. Also, try some kitty crack (Fancy Feast). The 3 flavors mine liked were all the “classic” paté style.
Best wishes to you and Homer. Hang in there with him and I hope he starts to feel better soon!!!
Q: Suggestions on eating a healthy, balanced vegan diet?
I have been a vegetarian for the past few years, albeit an unhealthy one. I’ve decided to start eating vegan and want to do it right this time. I’ve done a lot of research and I’ve come up with this basic outline of my daily meal plan.. does it have enough of the essentials? is it healthy?
Breakfast: -a bowl of Toasted Wheatfuls (which is a crazy healthy cereal with no sugar)
- fortified unsweetened almond milk for the cereal
- a banana (or other fruit)
Lunch: – a pb and j on my favorite 9 grain whole wheat bread, organic, all natural peanut butter, and organic raspberry jam
Dinner: -something like a bowl of whole grain rice with tofu and veggies
Snack: -a piece of toast with peanut butter, or a coconut milk yogurt, or a vegan chewy bar
–
I know I also need added vitamins and stuff, esp. B12. Can anyone suggest what types of supplements to buy?
Thanks!
Patrick c– haha I know it sounds boring, but I actually think it’s pretty good
A: Your diet doesn’t sound unhealthy, but personally I eat a lot more fresh fruit and veggies. B12 is an important supplement to take, I also use ground flax (sprinkle on cereal etc) for omega 3s and good fats. You can also get flax in oil form. Green leafy vegetables such as kale, broccoli, spinach, bok-choy, and heaps more- are a fountain or nutrition, they are good for heaps of vitamins. Use them in your stir-frys.

Q: Have you ever done that..!! I feel horrible!!?
Well, I’m a lacto-vegetarian. However, I always define myself as a strict vegetarian who doesn’t like soy milk and who’s aware of the importance of vitamin B12..!! So, I drink milk but I never eat something that may contain milk. No cheese, yogurt, chocolate or anything like that.
During this time of the year, we (people in Kuwait) celebrate an occasion called Eid. It’s similar to…….. Let’s say christmas. People visit each other, go to restaurants, and spend most of their time outside home and eat eat eat and eat!!! Even if you’re not hungry, you’re gonna be!! Anyway, this isn’t the point. The point is, I ate gelatin(by mistake)!! + I ate a bread that I knew it contained milk + chocolate!! I feel horrible
I hate losing my principles for food
Have you ever done that?? I’m really depressed..! It’s the first time I do something stupid like that!!
A: You know what? It’s like anything else people do either by mistake or not. You can’t beat yourself up over it. Just vow to do better and start over again. You’re human and humans make mistakes.
I’m sure you’ve heard that old adage:
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
I’m sure that was written for the reason that people fail many times and they get back up and keep trying.
You’ll be just fine.
