Q: is it true that heartburn medicines ex:(prilosec) cause this problem?
i been taking prilosec since years to treat my acute gastritis. (inflammation of stomach lining) and i being diagnosed with vitamin b12 deficiency and i do have symptoms such as weakness, tingling feeling in feet and hands, etc. doctor said these heartburn medicines can cause vitamin b12 not to absorb properly if taken for long time. now i am taking b12 and folic acid suplements but not actually feeling any better yet. so i will plan to go for b12 shots if doctor recommends it. my question is…should i continue to take prilosec while being on b12 vitamin or i must stop taking prilosec and fix the b12 deficency first? and does anyone else have this b12 deficency anemia if yes then are you treating it with pills or shots? thanks.

A: I quit taking mine it was bothering me.now i just use tums or rolaids.

Q: vitamin b12 level of zero?
I was diagnosed with a vitamin b12 level of zero 3 months ago. I was immediately put on shots once per week and also take a 1200mcg b12 tablet everyday. The shots once per week plus tablets weren’t working at all I was fainting, teeth chattering, shaky, extremely fatigued etc. I went back to my doc she said to increase to 2 shots per week. I give them (the shots) to myself because I am a nursing student and am able to do it myself. It’s been 3 months since I have increased to 2 shots per week and I still have EXTREME fatigue I am in the final months of school so I am only required to attend 3 hrs at a time each day and when I return from school I immediately sleep for 3-4hours even though my day only consisted of 3 hours and I get approx. 8 hours of sleep per night. The fainting has stopped but I still have the feeling that I am going to faint frequently. I have a doctors appointment scheduled in 3 weeks to get my blood retested. I’m just wondering if this will ever subside or if I will have this forever. The symptoms are still their just not as severe and when I talk to my doctor about it she doesn’t really acknowledge it as serious. Is there anything else I should take in combination with the b12? I also have an iron deficiency but it is controlled with pills and goes back to normal usually after a few months. I’m just so tired and hate it.
all she said was it was probably because I didn’t eat enough red meat for so many years. I am underweight not vegetarian but don’t like meat that much never have. I have never had any low b12 levels and I get my blood checked once every 2-3 months because of my iron.
I am unclear if it is curable. I have done A LOT of researching but I myself do not know what is the true cause so far I have read that it may be the intrinsic factor but I don’t know if this is what I have thus far.
The injection brand is cyanocobalamin. I take 5,000 mcg twice a week.

A: Did your doctor tell you why this all started? I’m assuming you understand what Pernicious Anemia is and you understand the pathophysiology of it.

If you do, then you may be able to figure out for yourself if this is just a temporary problem or if you will have this for the rest of your life.

I, myself, am curious how this started for you because you do seem to have a serious case. For anyone not familiar with Pernicious Anemia, you can find a brief description on wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pernicious_anemia

p.s. S.H., I emailed you a private note. I hope you got it. Feel free to write back if you have any questions. Hang in there with your schoolwork. This all will pass, eventually.

Q: Is a vitamin deficiency causing depression and lethargy?
I have mild-moderate depression. I’m usually pretty tired. I’ve had this five hour energy drink twice now, and both times it’s pretty much eliminated both those symptoms. For over five hours, I feel energy and want to do things instead of sit around. The depression is much less intense, if it exists at all.

I have a few questions. Is my lack of energy causing my depression or is it the other way around? The ingredients of the drink are fairly straightforward. http://www.5hourenergy.com/ingredients.asp The drink has a pretty large amount of Vitamin B6 and B12. I’ve read that the B vitamins are important for energy production, so I bought a B complex supplement today. I took one tablet about an hour ago and I’m not seeing nearly enough of a difference as the drink, not that I was expecting to.

Is the increased energy from the drink just upping my mood or is this an indicator of some vitamin or ingredient I’m missing in my diet?

A: Depression is an emotion that is basic to life. It is one of 6-8 that you are born with. Most of the others you learn. Vitamin deficiency is rare. A recent study by a British medical group showed no benefit to women for disease control in taking vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements are only needed if you are on a near starvation diet which has little or no fruits or vegetables. Look up emotions in a Yahoo! web search. Wikipedia has a good summary.

If you are diagnosed with clinical depression it is probably the cause of your lethargy as I believe depression is primarily a result of a habit of negative thinking. Your lack of energy is caused by your depression and that is caused by habits of negativity. Because you think positively that drinking the energy drink is helping you that “ups your mood”.

Try “positive thinking techniques” in a Yahoo! web search study the advice given in the links and DO IT!

Q: nutrition help?
if a person refrained from ingesting any of the water
-soluble vitamins, deficiency symptoms would appear last for:
a) Vitamin A
b) Vitamin C
c) Vitamin B1
d) Vitamin B12
e) Folate

A: You meant water soluble vitamines…am I correctly understood?
But, vitamin A is not a water soluble one. It dissolves only in lipid(fat).

http://www.emedicine.com/derm/byname/avitaminosis-a.htm

So, the answer should be A ( vitamin A )
The deficiency diseases due to the lack of vitamin A are as follows;
1. Problem with eye retina ( less light, vague sight)
2. Skin diseases along with gradual disappearing of epithelial layers in the skin
3. Too much cornification of skin (dry skin)
4. Appearance of “typical pigments” on the skin
5. Hair loss ( falling excessively and regularly)

Q: What is the cause of my low B12 count?
I’m generally a healthy person. When I was younger, I didn’t get sick a lot. However, as I got older, I got sick more often. I’m now 19 years old. My doctor took some blood and said my vitamin B12 count was exceptionally low. I have recently been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and anxiety. I feel weak and tired all the time. It seems that my physical and mental health is decreasing. I know having low B12 levels for a long time can lead to some of these symptoms. However, I eat meat and diary products. If I eat all these things, why are my B12 levels still so low? Are my mental problems caused by B12 deficiency or are they unrelated?

A: For goodness sakes! Get tested for Celiac disease ASAP! That was one of my hallmark issues, that and getting sick frequently (due to the small spleen we celiacs have).
Also, are you anemic? May want to check that too (pernicious anemia).

Q: I experience a strong pain in my nose which goes right through to the head.it pains a lot.what could be my?
problem.it suddenly starts and i feel somethng is inducing strong sleepiness in me.sometimes i feel as if i m going unconscious.many a times, it happens while i am walking on the road, where i feel like i am going asleep on the middle of road .

i would also like to let to share about my past medical annals.i have been suffering from deficiency of vitamin B12 and iron since 4-6 months.i have taken few medicines too.unfortunately, the problem persists. My name is ankit and i am 22 ,from india.

i read at www.ehow.com and www.howstuffworks.com about vitamin B12 deficiency.i experince the same symptoms as shown over there ?

i am heading to some really serious neurological disorder?.i cant study these days.i have had real poor memory since quite a long time. What kind of doctor should i consult ?would a neurological specialist be a right choice?

Please help.i have been ignoring this problem for a time because of the cost that it would involve , if i consult a doctor.
Thanks everyone for the help

A: You may be experiencing a sinus infection. Treatment requires a strong antibiotic (Ceflaxin type). Drinking water to dilute the mucus might help, but try an allergy pill like Allerest or Sudafed until you get a prescription.

Sometimes the internet can provide too much information. Without a proper diagnosis by a doctor it would be impossible to know how to treat the problem. Go.

The studying and memory issues could be something as simple as focusing too much on your symptoms and what all the ‘information’ is suggesting as your ‘diagnosis’.

If you know you are vitamin deficient, get yourself a good multivitamin (One-A-Day) that has a full range of the B vitamins especially, as well as all the others including Iron and Biotin. And take them every day.

You might also honestly evaluate your diet. If you are heavy on sugar, fat, and carbohydrates (Hamburger, fries and a coke) you could be contributing to your problems. Your diet should be higher in protein and vegetables than anything else, including lots of leafy green stuff.

If you find yourself dropping off to sleep for no reason (in the middle of the road?) think back to what you ate a few hours before. If you had a Twix instead of eggs for breakfast you could be suffering from a drop in insulin.

But then, it could be something more serious. Or just failure to get adequate sleep.

Go to an internist first. Describe your symptoms without focusing on the vitamin issue. Provide a list of your current medications, and what you have been treated for in the past, but don’t try to direct the doctor’s investigation. Expect a full range of blood tests including fasting blood sugar (diabetes), complete blood count (looking for anemia), Free Thyroxin and T-3 Uptake (Thyroid deficiency) and a few more checking for kidney and liver function.

If you can’t afford to lay out cash all at once make arrangements with the doctor’s office manager to pay in installments. Finances should not be a restriction to health care.

Q: scared to death what is happening? no judgments.?
ok i’ve had a stressful year i’m 19 year old smoker. i had a miscarriage and my mom died, i went to jail, and i was in a psych ward all in one year. i kind of stopped eating for awhile. when i fell pregnant i wasn’t eating meats at all. i couldn’t stand meat. well, i decided to get a physical from the doctor…..

i was experiencing weird symptoms like a “pins and needles” sensation. i would get it on my left side. my fingertips mainly and my feet, sometimes my legs. and it only happened on the left side.

i was diagnosed with a Vitamin B12 Deficiency. i’ve been taking them and working out. it hasn’t been as bad (the tingling part.) i had a nerve test done on both my arms and it came back normal. They said if they numbness and tingling didn’t go away that they wanted to do an MRI of my spine. I’m scared to death!!!!!

could i have a tumor? is it even worth getting that MRI? i’m know to stress majorly about things 24/7 (no lie.) my dad doesn’t think anything is wrong with me and neither do my friends bc I’ve always worried about everything. i don’t know if it’s anxiety or not. i was told pins and needles were panic attacks, not vitamin deficiency’s!

what is going on? is it stress? should i go back 2 the doctor after taking my vitamin prescriptions.

Thanks

A: First I am so very sorry abt your mother and your miscarriage. That is a lot to deal with.
You definitely should get your b-12 tested again and see the doctor again. If your b-12 is okay, then consider the MRI, if the doctor recommends it. I doubt very much you have a tumor.

Relax and see the doctor again and see what he says.
I am saying a little prayer for you now. Feel better soon.

Q: Anxiety/stress stuff, or something more?
Ok I am 14 yrs old and I know I have GAD. But I can’t shake the feeling that there is something else because of all of my symptoms. I went to the neurologist last week, telling him my symptoms: vibrating feeling in head/arms, tingling, and an electrical buzzing feeling throughout my body. I got bloodwork done because I am a vegetarian (he thought vitamin b12 deficiency) and everything was fine except rha was off (something to do with arthritis?) and I’m getting retested for that. Also, I have an MRI (spine and brain) and EEG in 2 wks. I haven’t been getting a lot of sleep, and even if I have, I’m still so tired. Recently, I have noticed some other things–the normal symptoms listed above and something else. At school and sometimes at home, my pulse is like 102 and sometimes more, beats a minute, although my blood pressure seems normal. Then, other times when I’m at home, it feels normal…also, LOTS of muscle spasms EVERYWHERE-nose, stomach, toes, fingers, legs, arms, etc-and yesterday something weird. Someone came up behind me and scared me, and I could feel myself tense up, and my left hand involuntarily twitched. Ever since then, my hands feel really weird. Like I can control my muscles but they twitch sometimes, and feel like in a way, I’m not controlling them at all…esp in the ring finger/pinky area…idk how to describe it. Any ideas? Also, my gag reflex feels activated a lot, even if I’m nauseous, and I haven’t thrown up yet….PLZ help esp with hands…anxiety/stress or lack of sleep? or somthing fatal????

Additional Details
Also feel like I can’t really concentrate, and that I forget little things a lot. Just wrapped up in my own world, or something really bad??? Not on meds btw. and won’t go on them.

A: elizabeth, i just came upon your question that you posted a few weeks ago about your body rocking back and forth without deliberately doing it and just read your symptoms listed above…
all your symptoms indicate you as a specially gifted young person known as indigo children. These are special kids that are highly attuned with psychic engergy (esp, telekinetics, clairvyoance) and a higher connection to God and nature. They are called Indigo Souls because when other spiritually gifted people see their auras, the color is Indigo. Indigo Souls understand with instincts that there’s more to this life than what we see here on this earth. They are very spiritual by nature and have a special purpose for being born during this time of the century. Indigos have been popping up all over the world since the early 70’s but it wasn’t until the early 90’s when people actually started to take notice of these special children. Mainly because there weren’t that many until then! But sadly, lot’s of children with these gifts are misunderstood and are often put on meds by school systems simply just not being able to “see” what’s going on. They just assume that if you are a lil different than the norm, then there’s something wrong with you. But this is not the case! Indigo children are highly intelligent and can understand concepts and abstract ideas instantly without anyone having to explain things to them. They are deep thinkers, and are often bored and resentful of authority figures who just don’t get them.

You should really research Indigo Children on the web and hurry on to developing your gift!

Also, this is a link that has a list of all the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

http://www.namastecafe.com/evolution/spiritawaken.htm

You are going through a spiritual awakenning. Just like myself. I am 28 years old and I just came to realize that I am also an Indigo Soul. Just remember, you don’t have to be from a specific religion or backround. You just have to know you are one of God’s beloved child and He has blessed with you special gifts! There are A LOT of people “waking up” in the spiritual sense these days and you’ll be surprised to find how many people are going through the same things you’re going through.

I hope this helps! Good luck and God Bless!

I hope this helps

Q: Ongoing sickness?
Around two or more months ago I started getting cold symptoms and feeling unwell with temperature/fever, headaches, fatigue, etc., and I have been feeling ill ever since; I now have a lung infection and I just don’t feel normal at all. My ears are blocked, I have frequent headaches, am very tired and generally feel like I have a constant cold, on top of the infection, and also my digestive system doesn’t feel right. Before this I seldom got sick, and although I had severe asthma at a very young age I have not had any chest problems at all for at least ten or eleven years. I am on antibiotics for the chest infection but I still feel ill. I am eighteen-years-old and a strict vegan, and I don’t smoke or drink. The only other health problem I have is a vitamin B12 deficiency for which I have injections, and although my injections are not up to date I don’t think it would be affecting me like this as it never ever has before. It is as though my immune system has stopped working! :(

I will go back to the doctor next week if it has not cleared up, but I wonder if anybody has any suggestions as to why it might be, or if anyone has any similar experiences? Can lack of B12 impair the immune system, or could it perhaps be a parasite?

A: On going sickness can well be cured by cosulting a good physician and some tests done to know the specificity .Apart from that, to stay away fron such syndromes you can do pranayama’s from a expert as this holds the key to a stressfull and healthy life along with a healthy diet.Lung function can well be cured with special breathing processes that are learnt in yoga.

Q: Religious Psychosis…..?
Psychosis symptoms include hallucinations delusions, and hearing voices that cannot be easily discerned from reality. There are many causes of it such as stress in some degree and even just a vitamin b12 deficiency. Is it possible that all of these prophets and people who see, are certain of things that are obviously not true (delusion), or hear deities are just going through psychosis due the the stress, fasting that causes them to lose the proper vitamin to nourish their their auditory system or are just stressing it beyond it’s limit or any of the other common causes? It has shown that studies have been in question by religious authorities. Are they protecting their insanity?
Psychosis is a variation of schizophrenia. Psychosis is not as severe yet it is not to be left unchecked for it can cause people to commit very serious acts.
Im not claiming that this is the cause for belief. Im just wondering if this is what most people who actually hear or see things are suffering from?
As I said before I’m talking about the ones who actually hear voices and see things. Not everyone. I guess some people are not as brilliant as I thought… or perhaps it is the delusion kicking in.
You have no idea the power of delusion it seems? Delusion can galvanize countries. Hitler is a prime example. Salem witch trials. And many other religions you do not agree with…
I never said psychosis cause people to bring out the worst. Perhaps it at times brought out the best in people. There are some illnesses that benefit people if anyone chooses to label them an illness… There is also forms of leprosy that make one much more beautiful… then kills them… Look at both sides of the coin before you judge.

A: I agree – there have been many cases of psychosis that – of course during those early times – were not even known or understood by men. People claimed that they were possessed by the spirit of god or even of satan, but I firmly believe in the mental powers and illusions that the mind can fully be capable of creating something so real. Unfortunetly this is my problem – faith/belief vs. psychology.

Q: Raynaud’s vs. Chilblains, or something else?
I think I might have Raynaud’s syndrome, but I dont really get the symptoms in my hands. My hands can get very cold and feel like they are burning when exposed to cold, but they don’t turn colors. However, my feet are a different story. My third and fouth toes on the right foot turn purple and numb quite often. The skin on them is very rough and dry, but not on my other toes (maybe a little, but nothing like the two toes), and and they are sometimes swollen. My feet always feel cold….I could wear 3 pairs of socks and still be freezing.
In the spring and summer though, I dont have this problem with my toes. Does anyone know what this could be? I had the same problem last year and went to the doc, had an aterial doppler study on my legs that was normal, its not diabetes or vitamin b12 deficiency or peripheral neuropathy. My sed rate was somewhat elevated. The doctor really didnt know what the problem was or how to treat it but it eventually went away.. I am just wondering what type of doctor I should go see about this? A rheumatologist, dermatologist, pediatrist, or neurologist? Thanks for your help!!
I dont want to go back to that doctor, I would like to get a second opinion but I dont know who I should go to.

A: what does your doctor recommend? seek a 2nd opinion.

Q: Very low levels of iron,l vit b12, calcium and vit d in blood – any ideas what may be causing this inbalance?
I have been on iron and vitamin B12 tablets for over a year now to bring up my very low blood levels (pernicious anaemia). I am on 100mg ferrous sulphate and 50mg cyanacobalamin twice a day, and have been for 13 months, but still my B12 levels are really low (with iron being on cusp of low ans normal). Three months ago I was also diagnosed as having a severe deficiency of calcium and vitamin D in my blood. Since then I have also been on two Adcal-D3 tablets a day (1.2g calcium, 800iu vitamin D). Coeliacs disease has been tested for three times (as it runs in my family) but has so far come back clear. Current symptoms are: headaches, fatigue, bruises appearing over my body, itchy skin and rashes, bouts of diarrhea (with food sometimes passing through completely undigested), mucus in stools, low blood levels.

I am surprised at my sudden inability to absorb these key vitamins and minerals. I have a gastroenterology appointment next month, which should throw some light on the matter. I just wondered if anybody has suffered similar or has any information which might be useful.

I was just wondering if anyone

Pleases note: I am a pescatarian, in that I don’t eat red or white meat, but eat fish. I also consume high levels of cheese, nuts, seeds and soya (in addition to lots of fruit and vegetables). I have followed this diet for over 15 years to no adverse affect. My GP says that it is not a case of me not consuming enough vitamins and minerals, but rather that my stomach/intestines are not actually absorbing them.

Q: Help with depression….?
The title may suggest that the depression is my own, but it’s not.
It’s two of my friends, actually… :(

Well, depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, no?

On Wikipedia (not quite sure how reliable of a source that may be….) it says “Symptoms of a deficiency in vitamins such as vitamin B6, B12 and others can include depression and other psychiatric disorders.” Does that mean that not enough or no vitamins like B6 and B12 can cause depression?
Also are there any vitamins that could/can stop depression?

A: Not positive about the vitamin part of the question. But yes Depression is a chemical imbalance. It becomes low and when your body is not functioning right people can become depressed. Going to the Doctor is the best bet. They have all kinds of medicine that help people to refill the imbalance in the brain. I hope all is well with ur friends and God Bless You!!!

Q: Iron Deficiency Blood test results?
I now have my anaemia/vitamin deficiency blood test results back… and they show:

B12 = 259 ng/l (normal range 181-800)
Red blood cell folate = 213 ug/l (normal range 161-900)
Serum Ferritin = 22 ug/l (normal range 12-250)

My doc tested for anaemia and the results showed I was fine. But they did a separate Iron deficiency test that showed the above levels. Because they were in the “normal range” they didn’t feel I needed even supplements to get my levels back up, despite the fact that even having them as low as they are, caused my hair to start turning white, the whites of my eyes to become grey/blue and persistent pins and needles in my hands and feet. My local nutritionist suggested I took oral supplement of iron to get my levels a little higher and it seems to slowly be doing the trick but very slowly as I can only afford a low dosage until I have more money. The problem is, the tonsils at the back of my tongue feel uncomfortable and slightly swollen (though not painful) now and I am assuming it is yet again another symptom of low iron/ferittin? If so, how can I speed up the process to relieve the discomfort?
and to answer that silly persons question, yes dear… I think you’ll find everyone has lingual tonsils at the back of their tongue.

A: Assuming you’re not lactose intolerant, eating full fat dairy products will help replenish B12 and folate and some iron. If you can’t afford much red meat – I know how expensive it is – the best iron source are Eggs, they also have B vits and vit A (essential nutrients) and the iron is easily digested unlike vegetable sources. Have three eggs (or more!) for breakfast and you’ll notice a difference in your energy. I eat three eggs a day! If you can, try organ meat (is usually cheaper) its highly nutritious, liver is full of iron and vit A. Vit A helps your body make better use of iron too.

Have a navigation around www.second-opinions.co.uk has lots of helpful information, go to the ‘conditions’ bit and look up iron deficiency.

Q: Autoimmune Hypothyroidism?
Just a brief summary of my overall health….when I turned 13 I experienced chronic fatigue (slept all day and couldn’t even get schoolwork done) and depression. In my late teens and early twenties, I always felt an extreme lack of energy and inability to focus on anything + periodic hair loss and premature graying. Not to mention that I have an apparently weak immune system which caused me to get boils on my legs over a period of 6 or 7 months.I am in my late twenties now and have reached a point where I can’t function at work and am now on sick leave. I have just about every single symptom of hypothyroidism -except for brittle nails. I’ve been losing lots of hair over the past 8 months – my eyes are extremely puffy – I’ve gained weight and am unable to lose it or gain muscle mass – despite vigorous exercising. I’m experiencing memory loss and I often find it difficult to speak or focus at all. I am exhausted and unable to get out of bed – I have heart palpitations and panic attacks. I’m constantly dehydrated and urinate quite frequently (every 10 min), but my blood sugar is 6 which is normal, I guess. I had a blood test done – and these are my results: S-Anti-TPO = 132* Free T3 = 4.3 Free T4 = 13.1 S-TSH = 1.2 it also showed that I have a vitamin B12, D, and Iron deficiency. My doctor thinks my problem is stress but she agreed to have me take Thyroxine for a few weeks to see how things go – but I’m not sure what my problem is….is it the vitamin deficiencies, depression/mental illness, or autoimmune thyroiditis? Is it dangerous for me to take this medication? Could this be the start of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism? If the latter, then could taking these pills be dangerous? Can it cause cancer or be detrimental to my health?

A: LDN, a drug approved in the 1980s for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction — is being used successfully at very low dose levels to treat a variety of immune-related illnesses, including autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, lupus, and autoimmune thyroid diseases, and new studies are learning more about uses for this medication.
