Q: Can anyone tell me the difference between vitamin B and B12 and is it the same vitamin B as in Brewers Yeast?
One hospital prescribed B12 which I used for a few months and a doctor at a different hospital told I did not need them. Why was I prescribed the vitamin in the first place?

A: B vitamins are Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin B7 (biotin), Vitamin B8 (inositol), Vitamin B9 (folic acid) and Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin).

All the B vitamins work synergistically so if one B vitamin is deficient this leads to other B deficiencies. Brewer’s yeast contains the B vitamins – Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and Vitamin B9 (folic acid).

Vitamin B12 deficiency starts to appear in cerebrospinal fluid at below 550 to 600 pg/ml or about 405 to 442 pmol/l. Deficiency on lab tests are classed as 220pg/ml or 160pmol/l which is why vitamin B12 deficiency is commonly misdiagnosed. Ask for your B12 blood test and check your results to confirm you are in the healthy range – over 800pg/ml or 600pmol/l. A more accurate test to pick up even the mildest of deficiencies is a urinary methylmalonic acid test.

A study in the US found that 39% of studied group of 3000 had low B12 levels. This study at Tufts University classed B12 levels at 350pg/ml or 258 pmol/l as “low level”. As deficiency is found in spinal fluid at 550 – 600pg/ml or 405 to 442 pmol/l, B12 deficiency would be in a far higher than 39% as reported by Tufts University.

Q: Can you get a B12 shot that actually lasts a full six months?
(For menopause.)
Today someone stated this. I have not heard of a vitamin B12 shot lasting that long. The woman who stated this said her doctor was giving them to her; so she would not have to come in every 2 months to get the viatamin B12 shot, just once every six months.
It sounds good but I just have never heard of this I am very curious. I could not find a six month B12 shot on the internet.
It is not for me at all.I am just very interested. I just have not heard of it.
Thank you kindly to all of your answers, and great insite!

A: I have never heard of this type of shot and am a professional in the health care field. The typical usage/dosage is either weekly for 4 weeks then monthly or just monthly; occasionaly with different diagnoses you will see them ordered every other month, but perhaps her doctor is treating her profolacticly which simply means, “just in case”.
In all reality, it is most likely not a “different” B12 shot, but a doctor’s choice on how often to administer.

Q: Where can we find B12 vitamin other than animals’s products?
Does the B12 vitamin exist in another source than animals’ meat?

A: Vitamin B-12 is naturally found in meat (especially liver and shellfish), milk and eggs. Animals, in turn, must obtain it directly or indirectly from bacteria, and these bacteria may inhabit a section of the gut which is posterior to the section where B-12 is absorbed. Thus, herbivorous animals must either obtain B-12 from bacteria in their rumens, or (if fermenting plant material in the hindgut) by reingestion of cecotrope fæces. Eggs are often mentioned as a good B-12 source, but they also contain a factor that blocks absorption.[23] Certain insects such as termites contain B-12 produced by their gut bacteria, in a manner analogous to ruminant animals.[24] An NIH Fact Sheet lists a variety of food sources of vitamin B-12.

Plants only supply B-12 to humans when the soil containing B-12-producing microorganisms has not been washed from them. For example, mushrooms are typically high in B-12 [25], but they are often grown in soil containing high amounts of manure and bacteria, and there is a serious question as to whether B-12 may be made by mushrooms themselves [26], and how much of it would be present after careful washing [27]. Vegan humans who eat only carefully washed vegetables must ordinarily take special care to supplement their diets accordingly. According to the U.K. Vegan Society, the only reliable vegan sources of B-12 are foods fortified with B-12 (including some plant milks, some soy products and some breakfast cereals), and B-12 supplements.[28]

While lacto-ovo vegetarians usually get enough B-12 through consuming dairy products, vitamin B-12 may be found to be lacking in those practicing vegan diets who do not use multivitamin supplements or eat B-12 fortified foods. Examples of fortified foods often consumed include fortified breakfast cereals, fortified soy-based products, and fortified energy bars. Claimed sources of B-12 that have been shown through direct studies[29] of vegans to be inadequate or unreliable include, laver (a seaweed), barley grass, and human gut bacteria. People on a vegan raw food diet are also susceptible to B-12 deficiency if no supplementation is used[30].

Q: I am an ovo lacto vegetarian who wants to gradually become a vegan. How much vitamin b12 do I need?
I am not looking for any answers about supplements. I have rice dream milk that contains b12 as its last ingredient but I am not sure if this is sufficient. I do not want to become sick. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated :-)

A: Read this link it explains about vegetarian diets and Vitamin B12.

If I were you I would stay ovo lacto, or at least ovo, because eggs are a source of B12.

Q: Who is allowed to administer intramuscular B12 shots in the stte of Oklahoma?
I don’t know where to find this information. I’ve looked at several state health sites. I need to know who’s able to administer interamuscular B12 shots (if you need a certification or something). THANKS

A: It’s a vitamin – I don’t think there is any certification needed.
I don’t know if Oklahoma has a specific guideline about it though, call a dr.

Q: Is it dangerous to have vit b12 and iron tablets everyday?
I am vegetarian and has started to take vitamin b12 and iron tablets so I’m not missing out on key vitamins. Is there a danger to have this everyday? Can I have anything else instead to give me these vitamins?

A: The B vitamins are a complex. When you supplement with just one B vitamin and exclude the others, you create a deficiency in your body of the ones you aren’t taking. They are synergistic; they work together, and they work best when you take them in the naturally occurring proportions. The best way to supplement with B vitamins is by taking nutritional yeast. If you’ve never heard of it, check your local health-food store. The best is a Plus formula that adds calcium and magnesium to the mix. If you use Brewer’s yeast, a common nutritional yeast, be aware that it is high in phosphorus, which is already in everything you eat. To avoid a phosphorus overload, simply make sure you are balancing it with calcium and magnesium. Cal-mag supplements are easily available and usually contain the correct 2 to 1 ratio of cal to mag. Yes, you can take an isolated B vitamin, for a specific purpose, for a certain length of time, but still be sure to take the whole complex. I generally take Brewer’s yeast tablets because they’re easy to find, but I make sure I take my Cal-Mag. (Take the calcium supplement after the meal of the day containing the most fats and oils.)
Also, vitamin C and exercise increase your iron absorption. I don’t know what your iron supplement source is, but I hope it doesn’t make you constipated. Iron is best absorbed from animal sources, but there are a lot of vegetarians, probably eating a lot of spinach.

Q: I want to start back w/the B12 shots.Someone suggested taking it orally or sublingually.Does it work the same?
The shots worked good for me. Thing is my gf had a bad experience w/the sublingual B12. She kept having breakthrough bleeding. Everything I read says there’s hardly any side affects. Is it the dosage?

A: here are some sites, i hope they help. best wishes.

i take B12 supplements and they’ve been great. spray and sublingual forms are absorbed more easily, which are good choices for loder adults and those with absorption problems.

a side effect of B12 defeciency is inflammation of the tongue. a sign of folate deficiency is a sore, red tongue.

eating liver about 4 oz. , which is about 2 bites will give u all the B12 u need for the week.

Q: Why would a doc say to take B12 and oil of evening primrose capsules if?
nothing showed up in a blood test for symptoms of exhaustion? I’m wondering now if my levels were bordering on a problem…Also, What exactly is B12 for in relation to exessive tiredness?

A: I would guess that the doc thinks these supplements will boost your energy–sounds like you went to the doc saying you felt exhausted.

Q: What are the side effects of taking B12 shots?
My doctor has recommended that I take B12 shots twice a month. Can any tell me what side effect will be and if I will notice any changes in my daily life?

Thanks!

A: My doctor recommended it for me for fatigue and weight loss as well. I get them from a local nurse practioner who is a proponent of the shots. I hated them but I lost thirty pounds and stopped taking them. They were literally a pain in my ass. It got better once I started bringing my ice bag to the nurse’s office.

Q: How long does a vitamine B12 shot take to work?
I just recently found out all of the medical issues iv been having are related to a B12 deficiency which iv had for an extremely long time. Anyway they told me to come in tomorrow for a B12 shot and im just curious how long a shot like that takes to make an effect. Will I feel that like the same day? or in a few days?

A: Youll feel it with in a few mins. But B12 umm take a One A Day or a Vitamin B tablet I do all the time… Too Much and youll feel very warm to hot… But maybe your body cant absorb the Vitamin thru tablet form but something to talk to your Doctor about…Unless some guy in the back of a Semi Trailor is giving you this “B12″ shot…. He is just going to take your Liver..LMAO

Q: What is the maximum amount of Vitamin b12 and b6 tablets should I be taking a day?
The bottlefor the b12 says: 1000mcg and daily value: 16,667%

The bottle for b6 says: 100mg and 5,000% daily value

wat do u think?
also, wats the difference between b6 and b12?
the bottle says take one, but would it hurt to take 2?

A: u can only take one and if u take 2 in one day theerr may be side effect on u so u need to take 1 and u need to take it when there is any thing less in ur body the difference between b12 and b6 is tht b12 is cynocobalamine it is a good source of blood to brain and nervous system, good food source and RDA reccomendation wheer as b6 perydoxine is used for metabolic activities

Q: How can veganism be natural if meat/dairy is the only source of B12?
I constantly ponder the idea of vegetarianism/veganism. I recently read about a guy who is an incredibly fit athlete who dons a vegan diet. One would imagine a healthy, natural diet could be attained through food without the need for supplements. Is it that veganism isn’t natural or is it that vitamin B12 isn’t that important? Or option C. I don’t know what that is yet. Input appreciated. Thanks.

A: You are aware of the fact that cows get their B-12 from their diets, right? Cows are vegetarian. It comes from bacteria in dirt. (This is why grass-fed cows contain more B-12 than do grain-fed cows.) The same thing happens with primates and a handful of other animals out there, whose flesh is rich in B-12 but do not eat a lot of meat, or any dairy (after infancy).

The option is C: meat and dairy are not the only “natural” sources of vitamin B 12. I also would dispute your claim that a diet is “unnatural” based on a single nutrient and the source from which it is derived.

Q: How do the B12 shots and weight lost center works?
Hey I have a appointment to go to a Dr. approved weight lost center next week. They will do test, talk with dietian and Dr, and get a B12 shot. How do these shots work? Will I actually lose any weight? Please share you experiences.

A: I take b12 shots once a week for medical reasons and I have not lost a pound from it. It makes me feel very good and give me a tad more energy. I can tell when I am lacking because I get very crabby and closed in. I take the shot and i feel 100x better. Sorry, but it does nothing for weight loss. But it won’t hurt you. And if you are lacking B12 you won’t notice a diffrence right away, it takes multiple shots before you notice.

Q: If vegans ate meat would they have to take B12 supplements?
Vitamin B12 is found in meat. If vegans ate meat they wouldn’t have to take B12 supplements, would they? That proves being vegan is wrong and not natural. Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegans.
Pet, don’t lie. You know that vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegans.

A: For the most part you are correct. But having a vitamin B 12 deficiency is not just overcome by eating meat one or twice. The B 12 does not stay in the system because it is depleted by so many different things. Everything from smoking, drinking to taking drugs the doctor provides depletes you B 12.

Q: As a 13 year old vegetarian, should I take B12 supplements?
I already take calcium and a multi-vitamin. Should I take B12 as well?
I take a calcium not because I am vegetarian, but because I don’t eat much dairy.

A:
you are a vegetarian not a vegan, calcium isn’t in meat. if so its not a main source of it.. so why are you taking a calcium supplement??

i’d recommend getting a blood test to check for any nutrients you may need supplements for. too much calcium can actually make bones a lot weaker and make you unhealthy.
