A: B12 replacement is the only treatment but the form of replacement depends on the cause for the deficiency.
Its very rare for someone with a normal diet to get insufficient B12 though vegans can be at risk.
Other causes may require higher dose oral supplements or, if your body can’t absorb it, injections.

I’ve had many tests including Thyroid (4 times in 3 months). Blood Count, Bacterial Blood Cultures, Serum levels, I’ve apparently had the full works! And all levels were within normal range!
A: I’m confused as to where Celiac fits in your question? Do you have CD or do u think u do? In any case, you need to see a GI doc with experience in CD. And get a full blood work, describing your symptoms to him. If you have untreated CD, it is very likely you are lacking in many vital nutrients and minerals bc CD damages the intestines and messes up the body’s absorbption of minerals and vitamins. If you have CD, and start the gluten free diet, your symptoms will go away–IF they are CD related. If not, you absolutely need to see a doc and fidn out what’s wrong.
Q: Anyone noticed an association between Iron and/or vitamin B12 deficiency and your monthly periods?
I have low levels of both iron and B12 and I reckon many others have this problem too, please answer even if you are just dificient in only one of those.
First of all I do realize that low levels of iron can be a result of heavy bleeding, but has anyone else noticed the reverse, that is once you stop taking the iron pills (and or B12 pills) your period gets very irregular?
Or is it just me.
PS: I’m going to go see the doctor soon. . . . I’m so dizzy and tired, it’s crazy.

Hi,
I’ve been experiencing heart palpitations. Along with many other conditions that could cause this, a vitamin B12 deficiency seems to be the most likely cause. I’m a vegetarian, so this makes it even more likely. The only thing I’m not sure about if this deficiency hits you out of no where. About a month ago I was feeling a little light headed and I just assumed it was because I was tired from being up a long time. I took a shower, and as soon as I got out my heart started racing, and beating really hard. This lasted for about 45 minutes. After that its on and off since then. I also had a really bad headache for about a week afterwards.
At first I thought it was from drinking too much caffeine. Since then I’ve cut my caffeine intake down to about two glasses a day, and I’m still experiencing them. So I’d count that one out.

I’m not really sure if me heart is actually racing or not. I took my pulse several times when all this started and it was only in the 90s. It just seems like my pounds, without my pulse going up. I was using a blood pressure cuff, so it also told me that I had an irregular heartbeat.
The only reason I haven’t went to the doctor yet is because I don’t have insurance. Though I’d never put money before my health, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t something easily solved first.
I’m probably going to try taking multivitamins for a week or so to see if it helps. and if not, off to the doctor I go.

A: Could be one of many things. I would say from what you are describing, anemia is more likely the problem. Eating items with B-12 allows your body to store about a 3 month supply. Iron deficancy is a little more common. I would get checked though. Heart palpitations could be caused by something simple but then again, they could be caused by something very serious. May want to reevaluate your diet as a vegetarian and find other foods or supplements that can boost your vitamin intake
Q: Vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly ?
I am having trouble with my homework. Here is the question: Vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly is least likely to occur from:
A. Intestinal bacterial overgrowth
B. Insufficient intake of Vitamin B12
C. Reduced output of intrinsic factor
D. Reduced output of hydrochloric acid
So what I am thinking is A. Because B12 deficiency, is often accompanied by bacterial overgrowth, correct? So a B12 deficiency wouldn’t occur from that. Digestion and absorption of B12 is inefficient because oo the reduced intrinsic factor and hydrochloric acid. So it could be B as well. I am just confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The elderly continue to eat the same foods as always without knowing the other factors are developing in them. When they develop symptoms they would never guess it is nutritional as they have not changed their diets. Even family members rarely think it is nutritional and they are sometimes put on anti-depressants.

i have been run down lately.Have had a few blood tests done by my doctor and he has ruled out a few things.i was told by a class mate about it possibly being vitamin b12 deficiency.i am looking it up and it looks like it is quiet possibly it.one thing is that it says a sympton of it is weight loss and loss of apitite.i have had the opposite since its been bothering me.i have major hunger pangs.can anyone tell me if it can happen while having these symptons aswell.everything else seems to make sence except for that.and any information on it in general would be very much appriciated too.i have searched it on search engines and they all seem to have exactly the same wording.just seem to be copied.thank you very much
A: It could be a number of things. Stress, depression, dehydration. You will just have to keep checking with your doctor and ruling different things out until you pinpoint the problem. Maybe you aren’t getting enough sleep. Maybe your iron level is low. Have you had your thyroid checked? Keep looking into it and don’t ignore it. Your health is very important. Take care.
Q: Vitamin B12 Deficiency Question?
I was recently advised by my GP that my oral swelling is a result of a vitamin B12 deficiency. My lips swell up to twice their normal size, are very red, and itch and burn like crazy! My only relief is to keep them slathered under a thick layer of Aquaphor at all times.
Are there any “quick fixes” to getting my B12 levels stabilized ASAP? I have a photo shoot next weekend, and if I can’t get my clown lips under control, I’m going to have to cancel it. I’m already on a multivitamin (which I sometimes forget to take, hence this flare up), so I’m looking for easily digestible Vitamin B-12 rich foods I can include in my diet so my body can replenish the deficiency.
My main disadvantage here is food allergies: No nuts, no raw vegetables (excludes leafy veggies), no raw fruits (excludes citrus). Walnuts, Almonds, Carrots, and Apples result in reactions I can’t control with OTC histamine blockers.

A: Start taking a B12 vitamin, or better yet, a B complex that spans the whole B range. The B vitamins are very crucial to good health, and since they are water soluble, you can’t get too many of them. One thing, take any vitamins with a meal, so they can be absorbed along with the food. Taking vitamins on an empty stomach will rush them out of your system, and waste your money.
Do not check your blood sugar level after you eat, it will indeed sway the results. You have to check it just before you eat, to get a true reading.

A: This is common in vegetarians… are you? It could result in megaloblastic or pernicious anemia & neurological degeneration of neurons. You probably have fewer than normal red blood cells, thus a reduced oxygen-carrying capacity. You need to be taking supplements.

Also in Clinical Chemistry Principles, Procedures, Correlations, fifth edition they give the reference range of 110-800 pg/ml. So as you can see even the clinical books vary on there numbers. I would just ask your doctor what range he or she are using to decide you deficiency.
